Thymulin is a well-characterized neuroendocrine hormone of the thymus. First isolated in 1977, it is a metallopeptide that must bind with zinc (Zn2+) to become biologically active. Its primary, well-established function is to modulate the immune system by influencing T-lymphocyte development and function.
In research settings, Thymulin is investigated for a wide range of effects beyond T-cell differentiation. Studies have shown it possesses significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-reducing) properties, appearing to act as an effector on pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines. Research also points to bidirectional communication between Thymulin and the neuroendocrine system, suggesting it may have neuroprotective effects. Its potential to modulate neuroinflammation has made it a subject of study in models of neurodegenerative conditions and inflammatory pain.
