Oxytocin is a cyclic nonapeptide (a peptide containing nine amino acids) with the chemical formula C₄₃H₆₆N₁₂O₁₂S₂. In the body, it functions as both a hormone and a neurotransmitter, binding to oxytocin receptors in the brain and peripheral organs.
Key Functions & Applications:
Uterine Contraction: It is the principal hormone responsible for initiating and strengthening uterine contractions during labor. Synthetic Oxytocin is widely used clinically to induce or augment labor and to control postpartum hemorrhage (bleeding after childbirth).
Lactation: It stimulates the “milk let-down” reflex (neurogenic reflex) by causing myoepithelial cells surrounding the breast alveoli to contract, ejecting milk.
Neurotransmission: In the brain, Oxytocin acts as a chemical messenger and is heavily involved in a wide range of social behaviors, including maternal-infant bonding, pair bonding, social recognition, trust, and empathy.
