SELANK is a research peptide developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is a synthetic analog of the body’s natural immunomodulatory peptide, tuftsin, with a heptapeptide sequence of Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. This modification was designed to increase its stability and duration of action.
Primarily, SELANK is researched for its potent anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and nootropic (cognitive-enhancing) effects. Its proposed mechanism of action involves the modulation of the GABAergic system, similar to benzodiazepines, but research suggests it does so without the associated sedative, amnesic, or dependency-forming side effects.
Furthermore, studies indicate that SELANK may influence the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters (like serotonin and dopamine) and rapidly elevate Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a protein crucial for brain cell survival, neuroplasticity, and the formation of memory. Its original link to tuftsin also means it retains immunomodulatory properties, which are a key area of its investigation.
