Thymulin is a well-characterized neuroendocrine hormone of the thymus. First isolated in 1977, it is a metallopeptide that must bind with zinc (Zn2+) to become biologically active. Its primary, well-established function is to modulate the immune system by influencing T-lymphocyte development and function.
